Tri-State Trek (CO, UT, WY)
Trip Description
Dinosaur National Monument's geologic history is a 1.4-billion-year story that includes the deposition of ancient sedimentary rocks, uplift of the Uinta Mountains during the Laramide Orogeny (70-40 million years ago), and subsequent erosion that exposed over 24 rock layers and countless fossils. The famous Morrison Formation, which contains the most dinosaur fossils, was deposited around 150 million years ago, while other layers represent environments from ancient seas to deserts.

This very diverse journey takes you deep into the canyonlands surrounding Dinosaur National Monument, Flaming Gorge, the rugged beauty of the Uinta Mountains, the Wyoming Red Desert and sand dunes. You'll kick things off near the town of Maybell, Colorado, where you can fuel up and prep for the adventure ahead. From there, head north into Wyoming, cruising roughly 40 miles of dirt trail along the eastern rim of Flaming Gorge — a perfect spot to camp and soak in panoramic views.

After a couple of days exploring Wyoming’s high desert and rim trails, the route turns south into Utah. Here, you’ll dive into remote backroads and lesser-traveled trails through the Uinta Mountains, winding through Crouse Canyon and eventually reaching the southern edge of Dinosaur National Monument. Continuing east via Yampa Bench Road, you’ll encounter ancient petroglyphs near the Green River, a striking reminder of the region’s deep history. Throughout the trip, expect a stunning mix of terrain — from layered sandstone cliffs to fossil-rich outcrops — all shaped by millennia of geological activity. This area is a treasure trove of prehistoric formations and natural beauty.
Dinosaur National Monument Highlights:
If you don’t have an annual pass, be prepared to pay the entrance fee to access key areas within DNM. Must-see stops include:
-
Fossil Discovery Trail (.57 miles)
-
Sounds of Silence Trail
-
Quarry Exhibit Hall, featuring exposed dinosaur fossils embedded in the rock wall
These sites are especially rewarding for dino enthusiasts and geology buffs alike.

Route Structure & Navigation Notes:
This is a multi-state route that weaves through Colorado, Wyoming, and Utah, but it’s not a continuous loop. Here's how it flows:
-
Start in Colorado and head into northern DNM and eastern Flaming Gorge in Wyoming.
-
The trail is intended to be driven counter-clockwise
-
Complete the Wyoming segments, then take Highway 191 south (approx. 2.5 hours) to reconnect with the route near Crouse Canyon
-
The Wyoming portion forms a loose figure-eight between pavement and dirt trails, eventually linking back to the Utah side north of DNM
